People want to bounce back after a failed career, a ruined relationship, or after recovering from an illness. We often remind ourselves that we deserve a second shot for redemption. What if the dogs feel the same way? What if they want recovery as well?
They would want to have a healthy life after suffering in a puppy mill, being alone in the streets, or after experiencing significant injuries. Los Angeles based dog rescue group Dharma Rescue came together with a program that will do just that. Let’s look onto how those disabled dogs turned their life from senior dogs to therapy workers.
Dharma Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing shelter, protection, and rehabilitation for abused and abandoned animals. They also make sure these animals have plenty of nutritious food to eat. Dharma Rescue also focuses on animal health, giving free medical assistance and therapy.
Aside from Dharma Rescue’s animal welfare efforts, they are also known for DAWGS (Disabled Animals Who Generously Serve). DAWGS is a rehabilitation program of the rescue group where they take in senior and disabled dogs and train them. Once they receive their certificates, they will work as therapy dogs in schools, hospitals, airports, and nursing homes.
Dharma founder Susan Fulcher said the therapy dogs and the people around them are perfect in dynamics, especially for patients with physical or learning disabilities. She noted how the children loved being with the therapy dogs. They can relate to the dogs because they have limitations as well, whereas the dogs are just happy to visit and play with them. It is a win-win situation.
The newfound therapy work changed the lives of these abused animals. With the love and comfort they give to the people around them, they find a sense of purpose, a reason to be alive and well. Dharma Rescue, through DAWGS, continues to recruit potential therapy dogs. Through their efforts to transform the lives of these senior and disabled dogs, they also impact the lives comforted by these new therapy workers.
