Josh Dolan and Jenn Stribl were part of a sanctuary that rescued and rehomed mini horses called The Peeps Foundation. They had a new recruit that had trouble walking, but luckily their Labrador Huckleberry was there to help.
Tiny horse tales
The rescue received an e-mail from a lady that bred show horses. There was this tiniest dwarf horse that needed somewhere to go because her mom didn’t want her. The team agreed to pick up the baby horse and bring her to the sanctuary.
They had no clue what to expect. The first time they saw the mini horse, they were quite shocked at her size. They decided to call her Chanel and welcomed her to the barn.
For the first few days, the horse lived in the kitchen because she had to be bottle-fed every two hours. It was a rocky start since they had no idea whether she was going to make it.
Chanel was quite a mess, and her legs were very wobbly. They let her out every day and try their best to keep her active.
Big brother
Huckleberry was one of the Labradors that lived in the sanctuary. He instantly gravitated towards Chanel and became this big brother figure.
The dog saw Chanel’s situation and tried his best to be helpful. He loved guiding her and kept her going by always staying by the horse’s side.
The two loved laying the backyard, and it was evident that Huck was so sweet and nurturing towards Chanel. Their friendship kept getting stronger each day, and the horse started acting like a Labrador herself.
Since Chanel lived in the house for so long, she picked up a few things from Huck. The horse learned how to climb up the stairs and loved playing fetch with the other dogs.
Chanel refused to live in the barn. She sneaked inside the house and hid in the living room while no one noticed she’d be there.
When people come over, they don’t realize that Chanel was a horse. They’d think that she was one of the dogs because they were almost the same size.
The sanctuary was glad to have rescued Chanel and hoped she would be able to find her forever home.
