How to Prevent and Remove Ticks in Your Dog

It’s a task to get rid of the ticks infecting your dog’s fur which especially occurs during spring and summer. These nasty blood-suckers are full of your canine’s hard-earned blood and they are notoriously tricky to remove. You need to get personal and close to your pet to achieve success. But if not removed wholly or left for too long a time, these pests can cause serious ailments. In this article, we provide you effective tips to prevent and remove ticks in your dog.

Shampoos

Shampoos for tick removal

Bathe your canine using a shampoo which has medicated ingredients that can eradicate ticks. This is a cost-efficient method of shielding your pet in the peak seasons for ticks. You need to bathe your dog every couple of weeks for this method to be effective as the shampoo’s ingredients generally last only for that period of time.

Spot-on Medications

Spot-on Medications for ticks

You can use a spot-on treatment that you can buy over the counter to control both fleas and ticks. These medications can effectively keep the parasites away for about a month. However, you need to be careful in selecting the medication and should read the labels carefully. Ask your vet for advice if you have doubts about choosing the best spot-on medication for your dog.

Tick Collar

Tick Collar

A tick collar can shield your dog’s head and neck from ticks. It should be put into contact with your canine’s skin so it can transmit the chemicals to the pet’s skin and fur. Ensure you are able to place two fingers below the collar when you fit it around your pet’s neck. Remove the collar’s excess length if any to ensure your dog doesn’t chew on it.

Also, watch for any discomfort signs like excessive scratching which could indicate an allergy to the tick collar. Ensure to carefully read the label information before picking up a collar.

Oral Medications

Oral Medications for tick removal

You can give oral pills once per month to your dog which can kill both immature fleas and ticks, and can disrupt these parasites’ life cycle. These treatments are simple to provide and another benefit over spot-on medications is you need not worry about your kids or other pets contacting your canine.

Tick Dips

Tick Dips

A tick dip is a strong chemical that you should dilute with water before applying it on your dog’s fur using a sponge. You could also simply pour it over their back. Do not rinse the treatment after application and leave it as it is so it can take effect. These dips contain concentrated chemicals so carefully peruse the labels before applying them. Do not use this treatment for pups and nursing or pregnant dogs. In these cases, ask your vet for suggestions.

To summarize, though ticks and fleas are worrying health threats for your dog, you can use the above tips to protect your loved pet during peak infection seasons and ensure their good health. These are the methods to get rid of the ticks infecting your dog’s fur which especially occurs during spring and summer.Effective tips to prevent and remove ticks in your dog
