When it comes to dogs, words cannot express how special they are especially if you want them to know it. Communication can be a problem if you want a particular dog to realize how deeply loved they are. The next best thing is to give them a special day packed with all the things a dog will love. This is what Debrah Wood-Lafave and Jose Miguel Santiago, and the rest of the staff of the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control did for Vick.
Vick, the dog
Vick came into the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control after being rescued and in a matter of months, became its most prominent personality. His goofy personality and gentle demeanor quickly captured the hearts of everyone in the shelter.
But Vick had several health issues and needed treatments. He had already undergone two surgeries, and the last blow was when he was diagnosed with terminal skin cancer. The staff was devastated. His vets already gave Vick a limited time.
Because of their love for the dog, the staff wanted to let him feel that he was special. They wanted to show him that he was not just another dog at the shelter. They want Vick to feel that he was part of a family. And because words would not let them express it, they planned to give Vick a special day.
Jose Miguel Santiago, the center’s information officer, took to social media to ask support from the community. As people learned about Vick’s story, the pledges started to pour in. Soon, the shelter has received enough commitments to give Vick a wonderful special day.
That special day will start with playtime at a local water park. Followed by a day at the spa. Then, to cap it all off, Vick will have a steak dinner at the balcony of a local restaurant. Vick may not have much time left. But the shelter is making sure that his last days would be full of love and pampering. And hopefully, pain-free.
