Useful Tips to Fly with Your Dog

If you have a support dog and are a frequent traveler, you’d need to take your pet along on your flights. But do not worry; it’s not difficult or cost-prohibitive to do so. Plus, airlines also offer needed assistance in this situation. In this article, we provide all the essential details you require about how to fly with your dog.

Do Your Homework

Contact the Airline

Search for non-stop routes that do not require any plane changes. Avoid flying in the holiday seasons when airports and airlines are busier. If your dog has to be accommodated in the cargo section, select a suitable time to fly depending on the season so that it’s not too hot or cold for your pooch in cargo.

Contact the Airline

Do Your Homework

Online booking may not be possible if you wish to fly with your pet. You’d need to contact the airline directly to ensure there is space for both for you. Therefore, book both your places concurrently. You may have to cough up to $500 extra each way for your tickets. Also, ask the airline about its policies for flying with a pet.

Get a Health Certificate for Your Dog

Tips to Fly with Your Dog

After buying a ticket for your dog, take them to a vet and obtain a health certificate that certifies it is fit to fly and has been immunized as needed. This certificate is valid just for 30 days and airlines ask for it for flights each way. In fact, many airlines ask for a clean health bill for the pet that is not more than 10 days old.

Therefore, make your vacation or other travel plans accordingly. Also, consult your vet about the feeding schedule for your pooch on the day of flying as most vets recommend that dogs should not be fed much and should have a near-empty stomach while flying.

Research about the Rules for International Travel

Get a Comfortable Crate or Carrier

If you’re flying to a foreign country with your dog, find out about the nation’s importation rules. Johnny Depp for one had trouble taking his pet dogs to Australia. Many nations have complicated procedures, so it’s advisable to get an agency in that land that can manage your logistics.

Get a Comfortable Crate or Carrier

Research about the Rules for International Travel

If your pooch is small, you can fit it into a small crate or carrier and place it under the seat before you. Ask the airline about the needed dimensions for the carrier and ensure your pet can comfortably stand up and shift around in it. However, if your dog is larger, you’d need to get a place for them in the cargo section. If that is the case, check-in a bit late to minimize waiting time at the airport.

After Arrival

After arrival, take your pet for a stroll to relieve cramps and stretch your legs. Having your support dog along with you on your travels is a wonderful feeling and worth the hassle you might have to go through.
